Jamba Juice/Verizon NSSA Hawaii Contest #4
Banyans, Big Island, October 29-30
Mia Melamed

What a weekend to hold a contest! Word on the beach was “best Banyans in two weeks!” Conditions had been completely flat or almost ride-able. Banyans is located on the West side of the Big Island and luckily catches all directions except east. This little town of Kona is hot and sticky, but with cool clean water and fun little reef breaks. Thursday and Friday was a foot with sets consisting of two waves. A small north swell expected was cancelled and instead a south swell provided us with fun head high lefts and rights lasting all day Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday morning kicked off at six fourty five with the Explorer divisions. Kona grown Big Island boy, Torrey Meister, won the Explorer Men’s division showing this really is his home break. In the Explorer Boy’s John John Florence was getting in and out barrels as if it was Backdoor. Clay Marzo and his signature tail reverse slides still impress the judges as if it’s their first time seeing it; his turns gets more and more radical every time. In the Explorer Women’s final Lani Hunter took first place with strong controlling backside cutbacks. The young but mature surfer, Coco Ho, dominated in the Explorer Girl’s division with her outstanding rights and Ezekial Lau boosted his way into first in the Explorer Menehune division.

Sunday morning kids were up at five anxiously waiting along the rock wall for the tiniest bit of light to paddle out. It’s a challenge jumping off because of the rocks that pop up when the waves go in and out; especially in the dark. Open Juniors began the day at six thirty with Granger Larsen taking first place in the final. In the Open Men’s it was Deja Vu for Torrey Meister taking another first place trophy! One surfer that truly stood out this weekend was Bethany Hamilton; the Open Women’s final was a sight to see. Her lefts were amazing with full body turns slashing her way to the inside. The competition was rough, but she pulled through.

It was definitely a worth while contest to travel for; the waves and weather were perfect and a convenient condo sits right on the beach for everyone to stay at. You’re able to sit on your lanai and watch the contest as if you’re in the ocean as well. Every surfer has greatly improved; the competition is only getting harder. I am very proud to be a part of our state and have these surfers representing us. Great job to everyone and see you this weekend on Kaua’i!
